The iCaucus is pleased toannounce the addition of two academic institutions to its international collective of information schools.The two new members of the iSchools organization are Nanjing University’s School of Information Management in China, and the University of Tampere’s School of Information Sciences in Finland.
With these additions, the iSchools organization(
www.ischools.org) now boasts 33 member-institutions in nine nations worldwide. All are dedicated to advancing the information field in the 21st century.
“I am delighted to welcome Nanjing University and the University of Tampere to the iSchools collective,” said Harry Bruce, dean of the University of Washington Information School and current chair of the iCaucus, governing body of the iSchools.“Both are fine institutions, offering interdisciplinary approaches to harnessing the power of information and technology, and maximizing human potential. That is what the iSchools are all about.”
International Additions
Housed on Nanjing University’s main Gulou campus, the School of Information Management dates back to 1913, when it was founded by American librarian Harry Clemens. Consisting of three departments—the Department of Information Management Science, the Department of Library & Archival Sciences, and the Department of Publishing Science—the School has an academic staff of 45, as well as 349 undergraduate students, 194 masters students, and 63 Ph.D. students. The dean is Professor JianjunSun. Nanjing is the second school from China to join the iSchools.
Although the University of Tampere’s School of Information Sciences was officially founded as recently as Jan. 1, 2011, its predecessor (the Faculty of Information Science) dates back a decade, and many of its disciplines can be traced to the University’s founding in the 1960s.The School offers five different majors: Information Studies and Interactive Media, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, and Interactive Technology. Under the tutelage of Dean Kari-Jouko Räihä, the school’s teaching and research is geared toward society’s growing and changing information needs. With the addition of Finland’s Tampere, the iSchools organization now encompasses nine nations.
Says iCaucus Chair Harry Bruce: “When I assumed the reins of the iCaucus two years ago, one of my principal goals was to maximize the visibility of the iSchools, and help the movement spread around the world. As my term as Chair comes to its close, it gives me great pleasure to note that six schools from six different nations have joined the organization during that time.”

The iSchools also host the annual iConference, a gathering of information researchers and practitioners from around the world who share the common goal of making a difference through the study of people, information, and technology.
